What is the Hawaii Digital Library?
The Digital Library is a collection of publications that have been printed in Hawaii by Hagadone Printing Company. It is one of the most comprehensive resources of information about Hawaii available anywhere. Each publication has been optimized for on-line viewing. You can preview each publication on-line, and then download a PDF file for printing to your ink-jet or laser printer. The publications are organized into areas of interest to make finding what you’re looking for very easy. You’ll find local business magazines, visitor guides, brochures on Hawaii activities, restaurants, entertainment, and much more. If you would like to have your product be part of the Hawaii Digital Library Web Site, we’ll post your product whenever you print with Hagadone Printing Company. It’s one more reason to choose Hagadone Printing Company.

What is the URL for the Hawaii Digital Library?
It’s www.hawaiidigitallibrary.com or www.HiDiLi.com (Hi is for Hawaii, Di is for Digital, and Li is for Library).

How secure is my product? Can it be edited? Can the images be extracted? Can the text be extracted? Can it be printed?
PDF files can optionally include embedded security features to prevent users from opening, editing and printing them. PDF files posted to the HiDiLi web site use security that disallows editing of any kind. Although printing is allowed, the image output resolution—including the type—is restricted to 150 dpi, which, while allowing users to print draft copies to their ink-jet or laser printers, does not offer acceptable quality for commercial printing (this is of particular interest to us!) Please note, however, that just as someone with the knowledge and misguided desire to scan images from a printed publication, edit them, and claim them as their own, so too can they “break” the security of a PDF file. It takes a very advanced user to get past the security, but it can be done if the desire and knowledge is there.

Can I download a web-optimized PDF file that is not protected for my own use?
No, however, as part of the web file generation process, we create an unprotected, web-optimized file as well. It is available to you at your request. We can e-mail, ftp, or deliver it to you on CD-Rom. Just ask your Sales Executive or CSR for a copy. In the future, we plan to add secure log-on to the site, so that you may log-on and download your files at your convenience.

How soon can I expect my product to be posted to the web site?
The files will be available for posting at about the same time the product is printed. But it’s up to you when they are actually posted to the site.

How long will my publication remain posted to the web site?
Once again, you decide. Each product has a “retention period”, which is the time period between the Start Date and End Date. Both the start and end dates can be fixed dates or dates relative to the date the product is printed. For example, if the product is printed on July 1, 2004, the start date may also be July 1, or it may be 3 months after the print date, or October 1, 2004. Similarly, the end date can be a specific date, such as November 15, 2004 or a relative date, such as 1 year from the start date.

How should I prepare my files so that they will be appropriate for the World-Wide Web?
Don’t. We’ll take care of that. We’ll start with the press-ready, high resolution files you provide for printing, and then reformat them for the web. We’ll create all the thumbnails, web-optimized PDF files, etc. for you.

What is the resolution of the PDF files?
The PDF file is “print-optimized”, meaning that the images are downsampled to a resolution of 150 dpi, which is suitable for both viewing on screen and printing to an ink-jet or laser printer.

Can the user download the entire product in a single download?
Yes. Look for the Adobe Acrobat Icon on the “Information” page of each publication.

Can the user download one page at a time instead of the entire product?
Yes. Simply click on the image (sometimes the thumbnail) of any page in any view.

What kind of information about my product is available to visitors of the web site?
Again, it’s up to you. The standard information that we request that you provide is listed below. Note that all fields are optional, except the product name, classification, and at least one category.
1. The Product Name
2. The Classification (Magazine, Newsletter, etc.)
3. The Category or Interest (Food, Finance, Health, Travel, etc.)
4. The Number of Pages
5. Your Company Name
6. Your Contact Name
7. Your Contact Phone Number
8. Copyright Information. This can be the annotation of your choice, or a standard copyright notice: Copyright © 200x, {Company Name}. All Rights Reserved.
In addition, we’ll add the number of pages in the publication and the file size of the PDF file.

Under which classification/category will my product be listed?
Your choice again. However, for a positive experience for users, we ask that the category you choose be appropriate for the product. If you do not choose a category, we will choose one or more for you. Note that because the Hawaii Digital Library is in its infancy and is constantly evolving, we may find it necessary to group or re-group products into categories that we feel are more appropriate, or change the organization of the categories for readability and an improved user-experience. In other words, we may change the categories from time to time to better organize the web site.

I don’t see a category that is appropriate or one that I like. Can I make-up my own?
Absolutely. Just let us know what it is and as long as it is appropriate, we’ll add it.

Can I have my product listed under more than one category?
Yes.

Can I zoom-in & out of a page?
Yes. Each page is also available as a PDF file which can be opened in Acrobat Reader, from Adobe Systems, Inc. Acrobat Reader is free, and ships with virtually every computer sold today. It is available from the Adobe web site (www.adobe.com). All type and vector-based artwork will render beautifully at any magnification on screen. Raster-based images, because their resolution is down-sampled, will not look as good at higher magnifications, but are of completely acceptable quality at 1:1 (100%) magnification.

What do I need to view the PDF files?
You’ll need a PDF plug-in for your web browser, or Acrobat Reader from Adobe Systems, Inc. Version 5.x minimum, available at www.adobe.com. Note that Acrobat Reader version 4 (or under) does not support the security features embedded in the PDF files, and therefore is not able to open them. If you use a web browser plug-in, it must be properly configured in your web browser’s preferences.

What do I need to do to participate?
Any active customer of Hagadone Printing Company can participate. Simply let your Sales Executive know that you would like to participate in HiDiLi. We’ll ask you to complete a Hawaii Digital Library Participation Form for each product that you would like to have posted to the site. The information on the form is simply the information that you would like to be associated with your product. In addition to the standard information on the form, you may also specify custom information, which can be anything from photo credits to a note from the publisher. The custom information will be posted alongside the images of your product. We’ll also ask you to sign a simple release, which gives us permission to post your product to the web site.

What are your plans for the future of HiDiLi?
The Hawaii Digital Library is in its infancy. We have many ideas and plans for its growth. The site that you see today is actually the second version, and incorporates many ideas from our customers. In fact, most of the features that you see today were a result of comments and suggestions from early participants of the program. Our customers are using HiDiLi in ways that we never imagined when we conceived the idea. As new ideas and additional uses are discovered or desired, we will implement them. If you have any thoughts, we want to hear them! Please call Erwin Hudelist or Brian Trusler at 808-847-5310.

How much does it cost to participate?
It’s free. It is an added-value service that we provide to our customers. It is also free to users of the web site, wherever they may be in the world.
